The Threat Of Mesothelioma

Today we live in an age of advanced science and technology. The progressive medical sciences have raised the standard of living and provided easier cures for diseases that were thought to be incurable in the past. Medical science coupled with the improved means of mass communications has resulted in making the people more health conscious as well.

The advanced medical sciences have also made it possible to detect harmful diseases that previously went unnoticed until they had caused severe damage to the patient. Amongst the many diseases that is increasingly being discovered in the masses is Mesolethioma. This is a form of cancer that is found in elderly men. The rate at which this disease is being found in the elderly men of today is alarming.

So what are the causes of this form of cancer? It has been discovered that the most common cause of Mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos. This substance has an affect on the membrane of almost all the vital organs in the body including the heart and the lungs. The problem in diagnosing mesothelioma is that the symptoms of the disease are common to many other forms of diseases. This makes it difficult to pin point the fact that it is cancer.

There are different kinds of cancers under the umbrella of mesothelioma. The most commonly prevalent of them is pleural mesothelioma. It has been observed that about 75% of all mesothelioma cases have been diagnosed with the above mentioned type of mesothelioma. The target area of pleural mesothelioma is the lining of the lungs. The most commonly experienced symptoms are chest pain, breathing problems, wheezing, shortness of breath, weight loss and coughing.

The serious problem is that all these symptoms also apply to many other diseases that may not pose as great a threat as pleural mesothelioma. Nonetheless a person suffering from these symptoms is advised to consult the doctor as soon as possible and get his condition analyzed.

There is another form of mesothelioma known as peritoneal mesthelioma. Although this particular form of the disease is less common it is still growing in number. The target area of this disease is the abdomen. The abdomen has a tissue lining around it known as peritoneum. It is this particular lining that peritoneal mesothelioma eats away. Symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma include abdominal pain, weakness, abdominal swelling, weakness, loss of appetite and weight loss.
