Understanding Mesothelioma

Advancements in medical science have made it possible to unearth numerous diseases, their causes and remedies. The accuracy with which the human body can be diagnosed and treated today would have been unimaginable a couple of decades ago.

Modern gadgets have made it possible to discover a potentially fatal form of cancer known as Mesothelioma. Although the cancer is rare the number of people diagnosed with mesothelioma has dramatically increased over the past few years. This particular form of cancer affects the layer of the body known as mesothelium. There are two main areas where this kind of cancer develops; the chest and the abdominal cavity.

The in depth study of mesothelioma has enabled the doctors to categorize the disease into three separate forms.

1. Peritoneal mesothelioms.
2. Pleural mesothelioma..
3. Pericardial mesothelioma.

 Understanding the causes

Although mesothelioma can be triggered by a number of different causes the number one suspect is asbestos. In fact asbestos has been tried and convicted as the root cause of mesothelioma in most cases. Asbestos is actually a very fine fiber material which is heat resistant. The problem begins when such fibers are inhaled as they enter the air passages eventually reaching the pleural cells.

As a result of the contact with asbestos the pleural cells receive severe damage over time which causes a malignant transformation in the cells. The most common sources of asbestos are industrial supplies and equipments. It would be naïve to assume that exposure to asbestos causes the cancer to develop immediately. It is prolonged exposure to asbestos that causes the cancer to develop.

Understanding the symptoms

Diagnosing mesothelioma is the tricky part. This is because the range of symptoms for the disease is so common that the condition of the patient can be mistaken for pneumonia. The symptoms include chronic cough, chest pains, shortness of breath, wheezing, loss of appetite, weight loss etc. When these conditions continue to persist then it is imperative for the suffering individual to consult a doctor in order to get himself screened for the cancer.
